Texturizers????

Before I went natural, I wanted to try a texturizer because I was under the DUMB impression that it would make my relaxed hair curly. LOL....I was soon corrected.

Well...now that I AM natural, and I know what a texturizer actually does, I kinda want to try it...

But I'm on the fence because I know it's a chemical...and being natural is supposed to mean free of chemical products (hence the word NATURAL).

But I just want to see what it does to my texture...like if it will soften it up or whatever.

Any thoughts?????

Hi Jessica,
I came across your blog via Natural Chica and may I say, your hair is looking very cute. I wish I had the confidence to BC!

I had a texturizer (ORS) in March, just before I started to transition, and yes, it loosened out the curls, but they became uneven (some curls straightened out and the rest just looked wiry). My personal experience of texturizers is that they made my hair fall and any new growth felt hard. Admittedly, I did alternate between relaxers and texturizers because I felt they did the same thing to my hair... :(

My advice would be to research other naturals with similar texture / porosity before making a decision. Also, you have come this far with your natural hair, try growing it a little longer, I'm sure you will fall in love with your texture.

The first time I went natural (about 10 years ago) I had a texturizer. Imo, they only look good if you keep your hair in a TWA. The problem with texturizers is that they only look good if they're evenly processed. So many factors affect the process (length of time left on, condition of hair, etc) that its almost impossible to keep the process even. In addition, it's next to impossible to prevent the chemical from ovelapping when you get a touchup, because unlike a complete relaxer, you don't have the strong distinction between straight hair and kinky/curly hair. That line of overlap will become overprocessed. That's why you see women with wavy hair, curly hair, straight hair, all sorts of odd looking, overprocessed hair on their heads.
